In 1997 a computer called Deep Blue beat world champion Garry Kasparov at chess.
Actually, let me clarify what happened. Garry Kasparov won their match in 1996, then (very narrowly) lost the rematch in 1997 against a Deep Blue which was aided by a group of IBM programmers and chess experts who directed and reprogrammed the computer between games. (They probably felt the need to reprogramme it after Kasparov won the opening battle in 45 moves.)
At the time, Deep Blue’s victory was hailed as an incredible achievement in ‘computer intelligence’. But I’ve always thought it was testament to just how amazing the human brain is. The computer had a team of programmers ...
