Introduction

Every year New Zealand tourists, mostly young adults already based in Europe, travel to Gallipoli in northern Turkey to attend a commemoration service. The event marks the loss of New Zealand soldiers at that site in the First World War. This chapter explores the impacts of collective memory, and the individual expression of self and nation, involved in this ritual.
