Chapter 1. Out in Africa
IT’S AUGUST, 2001. Saroni, a Maasai warrior, and I walk across the border into Tanzania. We climb a hill to watch the sun setting on Mount Kilimanjaro. An eagle flies into our view from the right, sweeping across Kili, then around us, and finally lands behind us in the top of a tree (Figure 1.1). It watches us in its kingdom. Saroni and I sit enjoying the solitude. Africa is a very powerful, spiritual place. In the quietly fading light, we stand up and take turns making photographs of each other with the mountain. The sun sets. Darkness surrounds us, and stars light our way back to camp.
