Chapter 18. Black and White

I HAVE HAD A DARKROOM MOST OF MY LIFE. Growing up, the bathroom had an enlarger in it. To a child, it was an enigmatic appliance to be contemplated while thinking deep thoughts. I built one in the garage during high school. My house saw the spare bedroom windows covered in aluminum foil, not to keep out the heat—to keep out the light. When I moved into my studio, the darkroom was one of the first priorities (Figure 18.1). It was rough, completely utilitarian. That was okay. It was a darkroom!
