Pull out this lens when you want to shoot something really close up. Ever see close-up photos of bees, or flowers, or ladybugs? That’s macro. Dedicated macro lenses do just that one thing, but they do it really well. A couple things about macro lenses: (1) They have an amazingly shallow depth of field—you can be shooting a flower, and the petal in the front will be sharp and in focus, and a petal on the other side of the flower will be so out of focus you can barely make out what it is (see Chapter 9 for more on shooting flowers).
