You can use any lens you already have to make a portrait, right? But there are certain lenses you could use that are much more flattering for portraits—so much so that they’re even referred to as “portrait lenses.” These portrait lenses are telephoto lenses, and the perspective and compression these longer lenses create make people look great. My go-to lens for portraits is a 70–200mm f/2.8, and I’m usually shooting at around 150mm to 200mm for the best results (the 70mm end is still a little too short for portraits, so I avoid shooting at 70mm).
