This decision is actually a pretty easy one. If I’m shooting in natural light, or even existing light indoors, I use the lowest numbered f-stop my lens will allow. Depending on which lens you’re using, the lowest numbered f-stop you can choose might be f/4 or f/2.8. Using a low-numbered f-stop like that helps blur the background behind your subject, which helps simplify your portrait. By blurring the background, it hides distracting things in it and helps create separation, so your subject stands out from the background (and it just overall looks more professional.
