Abstract

This chapter summarizes recent research on teacher quality in an education production framework. We firstly summarizes papers on measurement of teacher quality, distinguishing between the value added approach and the between subject approach. Thereafter we present evidence on factors that can explain variation in teacher quality, with an emphasis on individual characteristics and labor market characteristics.
