Abstract

A basic tenet of economics is that people respond to incentives. They change their behavior to maximize their well-being as the conditions they face change. In recent years, numerous education policies have leveraged the fundamental economic principle of incentives to try to improve educational outcomes at both the K-12 and college levels and among both students and teachers. The notion is that when faced with the prospect of rewards for high performance, students (and possibly their teachers) will exert more focus and effort in order to obtain the rewards.
