The Master Plan

SHORTLY AFTER I RETURNED TO WORK FROM MATERNITY LEAVE IN the spring of 2010, the economy felt like it was grinding to a halt. A series of never-ending what-ifs started running through my head. What if I lost my job? What if my husband, Sujay, lost his job? What if both happened at the same time? The stakes had never seemed so high. As a twenty-something, child- and mortgage-free reporter, I could pretend that everything would be okay. If I lost my job, I could take an entry- to mid-level position, even with a pay cut, if necessary. But now that I was a mom and a homeowner, I knew that if I lost my job, things would be very, very bad. What if we couldn't pay our mortgage? What if, down the road, we couldn't afford college ...
