An Overview
Like so many concepts in information technology (IT), the edge has more than one definition. Add in the inevitable hype and distortion that occur when a technological paradigm starts to heat up, and things can get pretty confusing. This chapter is about defining the edge, what happens at the edge, and why it matters.
Defining the Edge
We all know what an edge is. It’s the furthermost part of an object or physical space. An outer fence is at the edge of a property. Suburbs are at the edge of an urban area, and so forth. In IT, the edge refers to a location, either physical, logical or both, that’s outside the core of the IT infrastructure.
