Drivers of the Edge Computing Revolution
The previous chapter offered an introduction to the concept of edge computing. It explored the what of edge computing—what it is and how it works. This chapter is about the why. It looks at why edge computing is experiencing growth and investment. In my view, there are three drivers of edge computing: technical, business, and societal/cultural.
These drivers will likely interact in an iterative, synergistic process, wherein breakthroughs in one area will affect the others. For example, as employees become accustomed to working from home, businesses are responding with new services that make such remote work more effective and secure.
