Edge data centers contain a large number of computing devices in a small physical space. The density of this hardware translates into a need for electrical power that’s usually a great deal higher than a comparable building that isn’t used for this purpose. A 200-square-feet edge data center, for example, might require 100 kW of power for its computers alone. By contrast, a three-bedroom house, which might be 10 times larger, typically needs about 3 kW.1
