Overview

South Africa is Africa’s biggest economy by a long way. Its biggest rivals on the continent – Nigeria, Angola and Sudan – are dependent on hydrocarbons for their economic growth, but oil and gas do not play a significant role in the South African economy. Its economy does depend on the export of the natural resources that it does possess in abundance. In the run up to the 2010 World Cup, South Africa invested massively in roads, railways, schools, clinics, power and telecoms. It still remains Africa’s leader politically, and also in terms of economic development, living standards and overall prosperity.
