Chapter 19: Colombia

Overview

Colombia has long been associated with the two C’s of cocaine and conflict that have hampered growth and scared off foreign investors. Now there is a new “C” on the horizon – consumption. The newfound security brought about from the peace talks with Marxist FARC guerrillas and Colombia’s improved relations with its neighbours have helped boost economic growth. Colombia is also blessed with natural resources and an industrious, talented workforce. Since taking office in August 2010, President Juan Manuel Santos has focused on fiscal discipline, inflation targeting and infrastructure investment, which has further instilled confidence in foreign investors.
