Overview

Peru, like neighbouring Chile, benefited tremendously from the commodity super cycle. Growth averaged 7% from 2005 to 2012, more than any major Latin American economy. It has tripled the size of its economy in the last decade. The credit for this growth goes to Peru’s pro-market policies, stable governance, abundance of natural resources and trade with Asia. Peru has come a long way since the economic catastrophe of the early 1990s and has managed to lift millions out of poverty as per capita income has tripled over the last two decades.
