Chapter 7: Thailand

Overview

The Kingdom of Thailand, like the other Asian Tiger economies, is a resilient export-oriented market. The economy has managed to grow while weathering several storms, including the Asian financial crisis of 1997 to 1998, the tsunami of 2004, a military coup in 2006 and floods in 2011.

After a turbulent few years under the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra, which resulted in a coup in 2006, Thailand has since achieved surprising stability and growth, especially under the recent democratically-elected leadership of Thaksin’s sister Yingluck. Thailand next needs to promote growth beyond the bright lights of Bangkok in its second-tier cities and rural areas to sustain its recent momentum.
