Overview

The Czech Republic’s embrace of free market capitalism paid off in spades at the beginning of the 21st century. After the success of the Velvet Revolution in 1989 the government pursued a policy of privatisation that was followed by huge FDI flows that bolstered industrial output and laid the foundations for an export-led economy. Structural reforms that were made ahead of joining the EU also played a big role in attracting large FDI flows. The export-led economy boomed from 2000 before things came to halt with the recession in 2008.
