Chapter 16

From Being Libraries to Becoming the ‘Switchmen’1 of Scholarship in the Digital Age

Chérifa Boukacem-Zeghmouri     Claude Bernard University, Lyon 1, France

Abstract

Academic libraries are facing the most important and stimulating transition of their history. Their future depends on their ability to develop a strategy regarding the new stakeholders of the web and the evolution of Scholarly communication in the Open Access era. Their value depends on the new missions they are going to define by themselves, as whole stakeholders in the digital era. And maybe a lead would be to become the ‘Switchmen’ of the complex, nebulous and borderless world. Here may lie their future value in the digital age.
