Appendix A: State-by-State Guide to Individual/Family Health Insurance Costs

This appendix shows the monthly cost, in each state, of representative individual/family health insurance policies for a single person (40-year-old male, nonsmoker), and a family of four (two 40-year-old adults and two children under 18, all nonsmokers). See each state for details.

Methodology

All employer-provided health insurance data is compiled from the U.S. Health and Human Services' MEPS 2012 report and the Kaiser Family Foundation's 2013 Employer Benefits Survey. Deviations between state averages and the national average were computed based on MEPS 2012 numbers and were applied to the Kaiser Family Foundation's 2013 national average to arrive at 2013 state averages. The 2013 state averages were increased by 10 percent to arrive at the projected 2014 state-by-state, employer-provided health insurance cost averages. Individual health insurance data is sourced from the U.S. Health and Human Services' QHP Landscape Market Medical 2014 dataset or from eHealthinsurance.com for state-based marketplaces. When data was unavailable from either source, it was obtained directly from the state's Exchange website. All single data is based on a 40-year-old, nonsmoking male.
