AS AN EDITORIAL shooter, I’m always looking for ways to let the environment say something about my portrait subjects. However, when photographers attempt to let the environment contribute to the subject’s narrative, we’re prone to use the subject as our foreground interest and let the environment speak from the back. This, however, negates the significance of the environment in front of the subject. More than likely, the environment in front of the subject is also contributing to this narrative, and it’s worth using.
