Introduction

When natural gas is cooled to below –260°F, it liquefies into liquefied natural gas (LNG), which occupies only 1/600th the volume of natural gas. This property means that LNG can be economically transported across the globe in specially designed tankers. LNG has received a great deal of public attention because of fears of leaks, explosions, and fires. For example, LNG is shipped to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago (major supplier), as well as from Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, and about a half dozen other sources. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, France, Spain, and other nations are much more dependent on LNG than is the USA.
