Polysulfones (PSUs) usually refer to polyaryl sulfones, a class of engineering polymers with high thermal, oxidative, and hydrolytic stability. Their main structural chain most commonly consists of aryl-SO2-aryl linking units.

The first polysulfone is a polyphenylene sulfone (PPSU) prepared through a Friedel-Crafts reaction from benzenesulfonyl chloride in 1960 (Figure 180.1). Another two important polysulfones are polysulfone (PSU) and polyethersulfone (PES) that were commercialized in 1966 and 1972 by Union Carbide and ICI, respectively (Figure 180.2).
