207 Solid Polymer Electrolyte
Solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is a solvent-free salt solution in a polymer host material that conducts ions through the polymer chains. It usually comprises a polymer matrix and electrolyte, wherein the electrolyte such as a lithium salt dissolves in a polymer matrix.
The first ion-conducting polymer, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) complexed/dissolved with alkali metal salt, was discovered in 1973 by Fenton et al. The preparation and the conducting mechanism of a lithium SPE are proposed in Figure 207.1.
