Ensure that the Environment Is Conducive to an Effective Interview

It should be quiet, with no distractions, private, and comfortable.

Turn off your cell phone, reroute all calls, and do not allow interruptions unless it’s an absolute emergency. Remember, recruitment is PR and sales. Would you interrupt a customer? If the candidate feels unimportant or disrespected during the interview, imagine how he assumes he will be treated if he is hired.

Manage the Candidate’s Expectations

Welcome her, put her at ease, and then give her the lay of the land. For example:

Welcome to_________________ . I hope you found us OK [or some other small talk]. To put you at ease, let ...
