Just as applications themselves are evolving, the way that organisations and cloud providers package and deliver applications is also going through change. The need to provision software through full installation via running a batch, an executable file or other approach is passing. The use of specifically packaged, almost-ready-to-run systems based on VMs and containers is quickly taking over. In this chapter, I look at the strengths and weaknesses of the main approaches now coming to the fore.
