Behind the act of combining raw materials into a nished garment lies the
design intent. Like writers who pull from the same lexicon of language to
compose expressions of their individual ideas, fashion designers reach
their audience because they have processed the same elements of color,
textiles, and silhouette through their own sense of style, emphasis,
rhythm, and perspective.
Color offers the designer every shade and subtle variation that can be
read into by the viewer. Textiles provide a tactile relationship with the
garments, as open to interpretation as any other element in the design.
Silhouette, the speci c shape and scale of a garment, is an essential
choice that must be made wisely to create the desired rst impression in
even the simplest of designs. Accessories that complement or contrast
the central concept are a dialect of the design language, a way to per-
sonalize the garment.
In the broadest sense, all fashion designers have access to the same
tools and materials. They must each also address the basic needs and
desires of the person who is to wear their clothes. What distinguishes
their work is how their design answers the fundamental questions: What
is the message, How will it be delivered, and Why is it important?
