When a VFX element is added to the footage, it needs to be placed at the proper distance from the lens. This means that the element most likely needs to be inserted behind some parts of the footage (unless the element is in front of everything else). For example, adding a sign to a storefront at the opposite side of a busy street means that all the people and cars that pass in front of the sign need to be separated and then put back on top of the newly added sign.
