Beauty Dishes
It would be wonderful if when taking a beauty shot, you could simply fix a beauty dish to your flash, start shooting, and automatically achieve instant gorgeous light that would give you cosmetics-campaign-perfect photos. Sadly, it’s not that easy.
A beauty dish is usually shaped like a large metal dish, resembling a Chinese wok, with the flash head poking through from the back. If the dish were used just like this, the light would be very hard. Instead, the light from the flash hits a reflector cap fastened right in front of it, which bounces back into the dish. It’s then reflected back toward the model so there is actually no direct flash hitting them.
