Honeycomb Grids and Snoots

If umbrellas let lovely soft light spill out everywhere, then right at the other end of the scale are honeycomb grids and snoots. These devices are a means to channel the light into controlled beams so you can put little pools of light precisely where you want them.

Of course, these small shafts of light are hard, contrasty light sources that make very defined shadows. This is probably not ideal if you’re trying to take a flattering photograph of an elderly aunt, for example, but can be fantastic when you are projecting tight pools of hard light for dramatic effect.
