Softbox Grids

Softboxes give lovely soft light. Flashes fitted with grids give hard, directional light. Combine the two—a softbox with a honeycomb grid—and you get something that shares the best properties of both types of light modifier.

The light is soft—not quite as soft as an unmodified softbox, of course, as the beams of light are forced to be more parallel, but it’s very directional, so you can put pools of soft light precisely in areas where you want them.

Softboxes fitted with grids are ideal for lighting subjects with soft light when you don’t want the light to hit the whole scene and kill the atmosphere. They are also very useful if you are using a softbox as a rim-light where it is aimed back toward the camera. In cases like this, ...
