Using a Second Flash

On many occasions, a single off-camera flash unit can provide all the light you need in order to create a great image. A particular favorite technique of mine is to turn the subject so that their back is facing toward the main ambient light source, such as the sun. This provides a nice rim-lighting effect, good for highlighting the hair, for example.

This little rim of light is also great for making the subject stand out from the background, especially if it is dark and the subject is wearing dark clothes. Essentially, you are using rim-lighting as a separation light, making the subject stand out from the background and using the direction of light to give real three-dimensionality to your image.
