12Build Your Own Media Empire

When people ask me how I was able to do everything I wanted to do in business, I tell them that a lot of it had to do with my mind-set—a common theme of the previous chapters. But truth be told, I think the other really big distinction that let me build a business of my own choosing and inherit the earth is that I created interesting media that people read and responded to, and that drove business to me. That's the secret sauce.

So what exactly do I mean?

By “media,” I mean “information packaged for others' consumption”—blog posts, newsletter posts, an online radio show (podcast), some YouTube videos, and the like. Don't panic. You don't have to dive into everything. You don't have to be a tech genius. You don't have to do anything. But again, this is where I stand out from other people whose work is similar to mine.

Media Lets You Tell a Story

When I write blog posts about certain topics, they get the attention of people who might want more help in that area. I once wrote a post about car dealerships that led to invitations to give keynote addresses for several car dealers' events. The same thing happened with real estate professionals. But that's what this work did to serve me.
