There were three main phases to my research on how many companies are connecting sustainability with their broadest corporate interests and what exactly they are doing.
Phase 1: Identifying Sustainability Among the 2010 Global Fortune 500
I started with the assumption that companies need to adapt their core strategy processes and policies for sustainability to become an essential ingredient of corporate and competitive strategy. To test whether companies are doing so, I analyzed the sustainability approach taken by every company on the 2010 Global Fortune 500 list.
