Comparing Services

Before you dive into the descriptions of dynamic content services, it’s important to understand which type you have. You have a choice between two types of traffic services: Traffic Message Channel (TMC) and MSN Direct.

Note

Most modern units shipping now use the MSN service, so I cover that service in more detail later in the chapter.

Garmin introduced traffic services in different models over a period of less than a year. In March 2006, the nüvi 360 was the first Garmin automotive GPS receiver to offer traffic service as an accessory. Six months later, the nüvi 660 provided integrated TMC traffic service out of the box, and in January 2007, the nüvi 680 began offering dynamic content from MSN Direct.
