The old leadership model, and the corporate culture it created, dictated that our personal and professional lives did not overlap. Today we must be respectful of others’ boundaries but also willing to be personally accessible. We need to be true to our real selves and willing to reveal our fears and challenges, which are often driven in part by our personal situations. This is probably the trickiest chapter to write but, in my view, one of the most important. Having the courage to share your fears and challenges is powerful and freehearted, and it is critical to building trust.
