AS A FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE, I was amazed as I gazed across the network of paved walkways across campus. What was remarkable was how astute the campus planners appeared to have been—they seemed to recognize precisely where people would walk between the university’s many buildings, laying out the paths in a way that anticipated students’ routes across its vast lawns.
