accredited investor. A permissible—or sometimes exclusive—investor in certain professionally managed assets, such as a hedge fund or a private equity fund. A formal definition is found in Rule 501 of Regulation D of Securities Act of 1933 and includes both institutions and specified individuals. For an individual to be considered as an accredited investor, they must have: (1) a net worth, or joint net worth with the individual’s spouse, in excess of $1.0 million at the time of the purchase of the asset, excluding the value of the primary residence of such individual; or (2) income exceeding $200,000 in each of the two most recent years, ...
