Human beings are social animals; we survive and thrive in connection with other human beings, in community. We were born unable to care for ourselves and often at the end of our lives we need help for even the basics of existence again. So in the time in between the two ends of life, it would be natural to contribute and share our lives and our gifts with others. Your community is a source of support as well as a place for you to contribute to—both provide a basis of strength and renewal.
Who, then, is in your community? A narrow definition may be your family, friends, work associates, and your neighbors. Truthfully, our community is the entire world. Especially in today's interconnected world, there is nothing that you do that does not affect everyone else in some way. The production, consumption, and waste disposal cycle is now global, and we are all affected by everyone's daily actions.
How I choose to shop, eat, use, and dispose of my garbage has ramifications not only in my neighborhood but the world.
