The concept of variation was introduced in Chapter Four and five tools to learn from the variation in data were presented: Shewhart charts, Pareto charts, run charts, frequency plots, and scatter plots. This chapter further develops the Shewhart chart method as a more formal way to learn from variation and to guide the development of our improvement strategy. By studying this chapter, the reader will learn to select the appropriate Shewhart chart for the data available. This journey will begin by distinguishing between classification, count, and measurement data.
