When Oligarchy Becomes Tyranny

Because oligarchy concentrates political power in a fashion similar to how monopolies concentrate economic power, it produces political systems that are ripe for a transition into tyranny.

Americans tend to have a rather cartoonish notion of tyranny, thinking that it’s a system only put into place by easily identified evil people and is violently imposed on society.

In truth, as noted in the earlier story of Viktor Orbán, tyranny comes incrementally until it hits a tipping point where it can no longer be defied. Then, like a virus ripping through a nation, it overwhelms everything and can’t be stopped without massive death and destruction.
