CEOs and innovation

Introduction

We have addressed the role of CEOs as drivers of firm performance. Some CEOs drive firm performance by emphasising innovation through ‘intellectual capital, knowledge, experience, intellectual property, that can be put to use’ (Dumay, 2016; Nielsen, 2019). Studies that have examined the role of CEOs in innovation have tended to focus on small firms (Lefebvre & Lefebvre, 1992) because the influence of CEOs on the strategy and performance of small firms is potentially greater and more observable (Miller & Toulouse, 1986b).
