In both economic and political terms the 20th century clearly belonged to the USA. It entered the century as the largest producer of coal and steel in the world, underlining its position as the world’s leading economy. Its political primacy was less established and it took two World Wars and a shrewdly timed entry into the conflicts on its part to see off the old global political powers, particularly the UK as it steadily abandoned its Empire to build up a welfare state and improve relations with Europe.
