On January 16, 2009, minutes after departing La Guardia Airport, US
Airways Flight 1549 flew into a large flock of birds,

causing both engines
to shut down. US Airways Flight 1549 was ascending and lost power only
3,200 feet above the ground. Capt. C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, the US Airways
pilot, immediately took control from the first officer and began making
quick decisions. The first decision was the order for the attempted and failed
restart of the engines. The second was the decision to land the aircraft in
the Hudson River despite the instructions from air traffic control. Air traf-
