Hyrum Manwaring's successor, forty-one-year-old John Clarke, held bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University (BYU). He came to Rexburg, Idaho, in 1944, having started his teaching career in the public high schools. More recently, he had directed two church “institutes.” These institutes were created to offer Mormon religion courses when two former church colleges, one in eastern Arizona and the other in southern Utah, had been given to those respective state governments.
