As a child, I fell in love with everything wild and natural. Animals, landscapes, trees, flowers, seashores, deserts, mountains—the more removed from the artifice of humanity, the better. I spent much of my time in the fields around my home, observing lizards and insects, learning to identify flowers and birds and the cycles of nature.
