The iPod & iTunes Pocket Guide118
Top of the Pops
Want to see lists of the hottest movies, TV shows,
music videos, songs, albums, audiobooks, and
podcasts available from The Store? The Top boxes
arrayed around the edges of The Store’s main page
offer just that. All these categories, save audiobooks
and podcasts, list the day’s top 10 items (audiobooks
and podcasts list just the top 5). If you care to view
the top 100 items in a particular category, simply
click the right-pointing arrow on the right side of
each category heading.
Quick Links
The two links at the top of the list—Browse and
Power Search—hint that there are more ef cient
ways to fi nd music than clicking the titles you see on
The Store’s home page.
Browse
The Store offers a view much like the one you see in
iTunes when you select a Library entry or a playlist
and choose View > Show Browser. (In point of fact,
choosing this command produces the same result
as clicking the Browse link.) Click Browse, and iTunes’
browser columns appear, listing Charts, Radio Charts,
Movies, Music Videos, and The Store’s various music
genres in the leftmost column.
Charts Click Charts, and Chart appears in the second
pane, listing Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Top Country,
and Billboard Top R&B. Click one of these entries, and
you can choose a year in the third pane. Select a year,

and you’ll see the top tracks for that year from that
particular chart in the list below.
Radio Charts Radio Charts works differently. Click
this entry, and you’ll see a list of cities in the next
pane. Choose a city, and a list of radio stations
appears to the right. Select a station to view what’s
getting major rotation on its playlist.
Movies Select Movies, and a list of categories
appears to the right—Action & Adventure, Comedy,
and Thriller, for example. Choose one of these cate-
gories to see a list of movies that match.
Music Videos Music Videos are broken into catego-
ries as well—Alternative, Blues, Holiday, Jazz, and
Soundtrack, for example. Select a category, and a list
of appropriate artists appears to the right. Click an
artist to see what he’s or she’s been up to in front of
the cameras.
TV Shows TV Shows is broken down by series—
“24,” The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Desperate
Housewives,” and “Weeds,” for example (Figure 4.6).
Choose a TV show, and if offered, a list of seasons
appears to the right. Choose a season to view
individual episodes below. (If there aren’t multiple
seasons, just clicking the name of the show will
produce the list of available episodes at the bottom
of the window.)
Genre list Finally, the browser includes a list of
music genres. Click a genre name, and for most
entries, a list of subgenres appears in the second
column. (Not all genres offer subgenres.) Click one
of the subgenres, and a list of artists appears in the

third column. Click an artists name, and available
albums by that artist appear in the last column. Click
an album title, and the music contained on that
album appears in the Results area below.

no-nonsense
browser.
The Results area is divided into columns titled Name,
Time, Artist, Album, Genre, and Price, regardless
of whether you’re looking at music, movies, music
videos, or TV shows. You can sort the list by any of
these criteria by clicking the appropriate column
head. Click Artist, for example, and the list is sorted
alphabetically by artist. Click Time, and the list is
sorted by shortest to longest playing time.
tip
You’ll notice that a right-pointing arrow appears to the
right of entries in some of these views. Clicking this
arrow allows you to travel to the page devoted to that
item—a great way to explore an album or an artist’s
catalog after searching for a single song, for example.
