9A PRIMER ON COPYRIGHT
In my classes in the Journalism Department at Boston University, I often have discussions with students that go something like this:
Me: Nice picture with that story. Who took it?
Student: I don’t know.
Me: Where’d you get it?
Student: The internet.
Me: Oh, where on the internet?
Student: I forget. Does it matter?
Me: Yes, it does matter!
The issue is copyright. In the digital age, the definition and enforcement of copyright has become a pressing and sometimes vexing problem for anyone who creates content or uses the creative output of others.
