Directors have been making films about journalists almost since the beginning of moving pictures. It’s no surprise – after all, journalists are often in, or near, trouble and conflict. We cover wars, we investigate wrong-doing, we occasionally have time for romance. We do not, alas, outrun locomotives, stop bullets, or leap tall buildings with a single bound. But we do tell great stories.
Here’s my annotated list of great films about journalism. I like all of these films, for one reason or another, so I have not ranked them. Instead, they are arranged chronologically, which suggests some interesting points about the evolving view of journalists over time.
