The next day, Sammy made no mistakes finding the building and came into the office right at 9:00 a.m., as his father had done for 40 years. Mary was already hard at work, and the office bustled with a few more people than the day before. Several people said hello to Sammy on his way in and smiled with a kind of generosity he had not expected.

“You had quite a day at Mr. Bolton’s, I heard,” Mary said to Sammy when he picked up his messages and started to move toward his office.

He stopped to look at her. “Heard what?”

“Let’s just say a little bird told me how you handled Aching Al—I mean Mr. Bolton—pretty well.”
